What Is Post-Quantum Cryptography?

Post-quantum cryptography uses algorithms designed to resist attacks from both conventional and quantum computers. These algorithms can run on existing computing infrastructure, helping organisations prepare for future quantum threats.

Why Prepare Now?

A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could compromise public-key cryptography used to protect today’s digital systems. Although the timing remains uncertain, encrypted information intercepted today could potentially be decrypted in the future.

Preparing takes time. Cryptography can be embedded across applications, infrastructure, devices and third-party services. Understanding where it is used is an important first step towards a planned transition.

International Standards Are Advancing

Governments and standards bodies are moving towards quantum readiness, giving organisations a clear reason to start planning.

  • United States: NIST finalised its first three principal PQC standards in August 2024, establishing a foundation for adoption.
  • Australia: Cybersecurity guidance encourages organisations to begin preparing for the transition.
  • European Union: Its coordinated roadmap recommends beginning the transition by the end of 2026, with critical infrastructure targeted for transition no later than the end of 2030.
  • India: Its quantum-safe roadmap sets targets for Critical Information Infrastructure by 2029 and enterprise-wide PQC adoption by 2033.

What this means for New Zealand

Organisations with sensitive long-lived data, international operations or cross-border supply chains should consider how these developments may affect their security planning. Timelines and obligations vary, but understanding cryptographic exposure is a practical starting point.
